Kilowatt Audio Visual is at the forefront of providing South African events with booming sound and cutting edge technical production support. Cape Town Alive caught up with Managing Director, Dillon Jearey to understand what it is that makes this inspired company tick:
CTA: Firstly, it is imperative that we ask the age old question. Would you rather be a pirate or an outlaw?
An Outlaw of course! We hate Pirates in the music industry!
CTA: What is the biggest sound rig that you have ever constructed and for what event was it put together?
For the recent Dubfire | Deep Dish SA tour we used a d&b Audiotechnik line array PA system which consisted of 6x Double 18" Subs, 12x Single 18" Subs, 4x Single 15" Subs, 20x Line Array Speakers and 14x Amplifiers. At full tilt we were pushing a 128db on the dance floor which is only 12db less than a fighter jet at take off! It was loud, but more importantly it was clear! I suppose you now want to know what the system is worth. Just over R4.3mil! and that's without the 4xCDJ 1000's and the DJM800 mixer we used.
CTA: Which act or party which you constructed the rig for stands out as your most memorable?
I would say it is a tie between the Infected Mushroom SA tour and the Queens plate horse racing event!
CTA: Which international festival is the pinnacle for any sound production crew to be hired?
The amount of festivals now taking place in the world is monumental, but if I was forced into making a choice I would say the Glastonbury Festival which runs in the UK and sees over 200 000 people attending the weekend's festivities!
CTA: Which act would you most like to see playing on one of your rigs?
On the band side I would really love to work with Muse or Kings of Leon and on the DJ front I would love to have Ferry Corsten on a gig!
CTA: What is the average cost of one of your rigs?
Yet another difficult question. Firstly, we don't just do sound systems. We are a full service technical support company that facilitates clients from concept to final delivery of events. We can help you at your event from as little as R500. Our biggest event rental to date was round R500k for one event.
CTA: Do you have any exciting jobs coming up in the future that you are willing to let us in on?
Of course! This is Kilowatt AV we talking about here! In Feb we will be supporting DJmag.com # 7 World DJ Sasha, on his SA tour. It rolls into Cape Town on the 14th of feb. There are also rumors of Armin van Buuren and Kerry Chandler making appearances in 2009. For more info check out the industry events page at www.kilowatt.co.za
CTA: What type of events do you cater for and how can people get in contact with you?
As I said earlier, we are a full service technical support and equipment rental company. So no matter how big or small your event, we would love to help you. We now have branches in Cape Town, Joburg and Durban and you can reach us on our national line 0861 000 363 or through www.kilowatt.co.za
CTA: What differentiates Kilowatt from other sound companies? Any unique instruments or tools?
PASSION! We all love what we do and we love doing it for our clients, hence our tagline ...the power to inspire. We do have a couple of tricks up our sleeves that set us apart from the rest, but If I told you... I'll definitely become an outlaw!
CTA: When did you establish Kilowatt?
Kilowatt AV was founded in June 2007, so we are still the baby in the industry, but we are making big waves, throwing our toys at the country's biggest and best events!
KILOWATT AV...the power to inspire!
